A Winter Block Party for Chicago's Hip-Hop Arts
01/13/09 - Filed in: Events
Sunday, January 25, 2009 @ noon - 5:00 p.m.
This day long event begins with a free “Winter Block Party,” celebrating Chicago’s hip-hop arts. Featuring a live mural painting by Revise CMW, one of Chicago's finest graffiti artists; an open mic showcase; music by DJ Itch13 and DJ Issues; and a debut gallery exhibition of works-for-sale by some of Chicago's most notable contemporary artists.
Participating artists include: Krista Franklin, Zeph, Brett Neiman, Kane, Novem Studios, Roper, Revise CMW, The Cartel, Rebekah Raleigh, Sam Adams, Stephanie Land, James "Casper" Jankowiak, Sandra Antongiorgi, David Robinson, Rebecca Crouch and Kuumba Lynx.
Revise CMW was exposed to the world of graffiti at a very young age through the colorful rooftops Chicago's redline had to offer. Revise has always had an appreciation for the elements of style, color, form and composition in graffiti, and has come to stand out throughout the graffiti world due to his constant experimentation. His artistic approach has stretched far beyond the graffiti standard of producing letters.
3PM - "Open Mic Academy: The State of Our Union" featuring Idris Goodwin and Poetry Slam Champion Roger Bonair-Agrad, curated by Kevin Coval. This event is co-hosted by Young Chicago Authors and The Public Square, a program of the Illinois Humanities Council. “The State of Our Union” is part of The Public Square’s Looking for Democracy series, made possible in part by the Woods Fund of Chicago.
7 PM - NOT TO MISS!!! After celebrating all day, join us in the evening for a one-of-a-kind State of Society Report, when former graffiti-writer, turned writer/publisher, turned activist/organizer, turned institution builder, Chicago-born William "Upski" Wimsatt gives us his own State of Society Report, which he's titled: "Movement-Building in the Age of Obama - An Evening of Stories, Strategies and Straight Talk," and then is is joined on stage by Chicago Tribune columnist Rick Kogan to talk about politics, art and the public square.
